Lake County is in the far NE corner of the state, thus it hosts County Route A-1 within the nationwide North American County Association (NACA) scheme. This road is on the WI-IL line. (Winthrop Harbor)

IL-22 used to run a loop around the Chicago area, on the current IL-31 and US-30, but now runs only Highland Park to Fox River Grove. (North Barrington)

IL-43 used to be IL-42A. It crosses IL-60 (former IL-59A) at Lake Forest. AS far as I know this is the only pace in IL where 2 "-A" routes crossed. (Lake Forest)

This section of IL-53 will lose it's number when the FAP342 expressway is built. This will extend the current IL-53 expressway north to Grays Lake, and then to I-94. (Long Grove)

IL-131 and IL-176 come together in a unique way. They both end here, with IL-131 going north on Green Bay Road, and IL-176 going west on Rockland Road. Note the small numerals on IL-176. Several of these signs appeared during a sign replacement program a few years back. I have not seen any other route with this size (6 inch) numerals elsewhere. (Lake Bluff)

IL-83 thru Lake County was once IL-54 south of Grays Lake and IL-21 north. (Mundelein)

IL-120 was rerouted south of Volo a few years back. The old road goes thru a thriving antique and tourist center. (Volo)

IL-132 is Grand Avenue in Lake County. It used to extend south on IL-59 then west on Grand Avenue again to US-12 in Fox Lake but was pulled back during the early 1970's. (Fox Lake Hills)

IL-134 is a short one, about 6 miles from Hainesville to Fox Lake. It received a number in the 1950's, and was previously unnumbered. (Fox Lake)

IL-137 is a weird one. The original routing was Libertyville to North Chicago. It was extended west to Grayslake after IL-21 and IL-63 were rerouted in the 1970's. It was further extended north to the WI line, mostly on the former route of IL-42 (Sheridan Road) to put a number on the Amstutz Expressway and Pershing Road Expressway in the early 1990's. (2 disconnected freeways that really go nowhere yet.). This makes for a unique "J" shaped route. (North Chicago)

IL-173 runs partly on the former route of an old C&NW railroad line. It was extended north on the old IL-42 in 1971 until IL-137 was extended north in the early 1990's.

US-12 is designated as a Freeway. Well, yes and no. By state definition it is, but not in the common vernacular. These signs warn builders to check with the Highway Department before making improvements to neighboring properties. (Lakemoor)
